Making the rounds

Off the Couch
By PROVIDENCE PHOENIX MUSIC STAFF  |  August 11, 2010

SEXCOFFEE will return to action on FRIDAY (the 13th!) with support from PISTOL SHOT GYPSY and FOR THE LOVE OF SLOANE at The Colosseum downtown ($10, doors at 7 pm), followed by an after-party at The Spot with must-see rawk siblings VULGARRITY (we're still abuzzin' over the Garritys' sick set at our BMP bash. Wow). Rest up and gear up for the big one at AS220 — FOO FEST — beginning around 1 pm on SATURDAY (the 14th). It's only $5 for 12 hours of diversified, killer sounds (I'm looking looking forward to that Arcing set). Check pages 8-11 for all you need to know about AS220 and the fest. There's plenty of action away from the Downcity area as well, with experi-jazz quartet INTERPLAY (thanks to Andrew Martin of PotHolesInMy Blog.com for the heads-up) at Firehouse 13 (401.270.1801) with opening acts LEATHER BASTARD and the TOM CASALE GROUP, while acclaimed Latin-funk crew SANTA MAMBA will Rock the Plaza at Patriot Place in Foxboro, MA, at 5 pm. Also, MARK CUTLER & MEN OF GREAT COURAGE visit the Penalty Box (401.331.8545), or hit the trail to Bristol for two of Rhody's best in SIX STAR GENERAL and THE DIEPODS, guaranteed to once again decimate the Common Pub (401.253.9801). It's 21-plus and there's no cover. Do it.

A quick note of congrats to the teen hip-hop band KEY SOLDIERS, based out of the Pawtucket Boys & Girls Club. They won 1st place national honors for Best Musical Production (ages 13-15) in BGCA's annual Digital Arts Festival, which is even more impressive considering there are more than 4000 B&G clubs nationally with more than four million members. Pawtucket B&G spokesperson Rick Goff proudly reports the winning tune, "Big Dreaming," was "written, recorded and mixed at the Club, and shows what B&G Club programs can nurture, encourage and produce for under-served kids interested in the performing arts." The band's leader, Marlin DaCruz, and Club music director Ben Hughes accepted the award at BGCA headquarters in Atlanta last month.

And here's a shout for one of our favorite acts, TALLAHASSEE, who have set up a pledge drive at their website, as (former Pats O-lineman) Brian Barthelmes and the crew rally up dough for their next full-length album, to be recorded in LA. If you didn't pick up 2009's Wolfe Moon (or their new EP, Tallahassee Schmallahassee), then you're seriously snoozing and losing. A variety of Tallahassee pledge packages are available, including Barthelmes's hand-crafted shirts, artwork, books, and tote bags, ranging up to a $3000 pledge, whereupon the burly, gentle giant Barthelmes will have your face tattooed on his body! Tallahassee beard combs also available!
