Christmas on Mars
begins as an assault — pans of outer space intercut with shots of a bloody fetus and blasts of noise — and ends as a charming and innovative Christmas fable. Stylized after the sci-fi B-movies of yore, the film recycles Atomic Age angst: a group living in a space station on Mars have run out of spare parts, and it seems that everyone’s doomed. That is, until a Martian appears played by Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne (who directed with Bradley Beesley and George Salisbury). Mute and Zen-serene, he not only repairs the ship, he also brings magic and hope to the sterile expanse of hyper-reality that is driving everyone insane. Some of the pseudo-philosophy and symbolism is laid on thick; the low-budget f/x, on the other hand, are not so much shabby as an homage to the old genre entries that are the film’s inspiration. And you can’t go wrong with a supporting cast that includes Adam Goldberg, SNL’s Fred Armisen, and
Blues Clues
' Steve Burns.

More buried treasures from Boston Underground Film Festival
Audiences have grown jaded as the thrills have gotten cheap, generic, and superficial. But the Boston Underground Film Festival, now in its 13th year, remains a reliable source for the kind of jolts to the system the medium was meant to provide.
Built for two: Bike Porn 4
Sano — Portland bike enthusiast, ordained minister, and curator/instigator of the annual Bike Porn touring film festival — was released from Canadian custody not long after this alleged exchange (which he reported on his Facebook page). Which is lucky for us, since otherwise we'd be forced to resort to the internet for our bicycle-themed pornography.
The LGBT Film Festival maintains a proud tradition
The recent commercial releases might not be so hot, but otherwise, local filmgoers been enjoying an embarrassment of riches.

Review: Nostalgia for the Light
The driest place on earth is the Atacama desert in Chile. Ten thousand feet above sea level, it allows astronomers the clearest skies in the world for observing the universe; they gaze as far back as the Big Bang and the origins of the cosmos.
