Diesel proves his versatility, but does it mean anything?

WASHED UP: Diesel looks, and acts, like it in Find Me Guilty.

Incorporating way too much real testimony, this tedious drama presents the ho-hum courtroom antics of Jackie DiNorscio (Vin Diesel), a balding, big-hearted wise guy intent on proving his loyalty to the Lucchese crime family. Fed up with his lawyer and already facing 30 years, the big galoot decides to defend himself in a super-sized trial involving 12 lawyers and 70 uni-browed defendants. Jackie’s feel-good arguments veer awkwardly between crass and saccharine, baffling both sides and making the verdict in the unbearably long trial anyone’s guess. Once again on his soapbox, director Sidney Lumet makes some legitimate points about the Mafia-baiting RICO Act and prosecution overzealotry, but don’t expect anything comparable to his earlier courtroom efforts (Twelve Angry Men, The Verdict). Diesel, looking and acting pretty washed up, isn’t as one-sided as we all thought, but he’s still pretty useless.
