27 Dresses
An urban fairy tale
By
MARK BAZER
| January 16, 2008
PRETTY IN ORANGE: Katherine Heigl dresses the part.
Katherine Heigl, who not long ago lamented the sexism of her breakout hit
Knocked Up
, stars here as a single woman who’s obsessed with weddings and is secretly in love with her boss. Jane has been an enthusiastic bridesmaid in 27 weddings (hence the title), but it’s the prospect of the 28th — between her boss (Edward Burns) and sex-kitten sister (Malin Akerman) — that sends her over the edge. There to catch her (after first annoying her for a really long time!) is a pretty-boy journalist (James Madsen channeling Rob Lowe) who, whadd’ya know, writes about weddings. All the hallmarks of the not-appropriate-for-anyone-over-14 “urban fairy tale” are here, starting with the “plain” heroine played by a beautiful Hollywood star. But Aline Brosh McKenna’s script, though hardly as sharp as her previous one,
The Devil Wears Prada
, has some surprises, director Anne Fletcher moves things along, and, well, I always cry at movies about weddings.

Review: The Ugly Truth
The biting revelation promised by the title of Robert Luketic's fluff never bares its teeth.
Bridesmaids' banter
At this upper-crust Tennessee wedding, we never see the bride, but her quintet of reluctant bridesmaids gets down to some deep and dirty truths in the sassy, irreverent Five Women Wearing the Same Dress, an early comedy by Alan Ball.

Weddings
Classical ballet is full of third-act weddings.

Enough about political justice; bring on the celebrity weddings!
Confetti
British theater veteran Debbie Isitt’s mock-documentary follows three couples in the title bridal magazine’s contest for the “Most Original Wedding of the Year,” the prize being a million-dollar dream home . Watch the trailer for Confetti (QuickTime)
It's time to party!
Doug Kimmel and Ron Schwiser were married 40 years ago by a Presbyterian minister. They've lived in Hancock — where they pay taxes, attend church, and volunteer in the community — for more than 20 years. Yet, they are virtual strangers in the eyes of the law. They are denied the more than 400 legal rights and benefits that come with marriage under Maine law.
The Big Hurt: Strung Out
A friend of mine is getting married soon, and she's been looking around for some classy wedding music.
Vessels + dresses
I bought the dress.
Get ready, get set...
That’s just some male fantasy about virginity. It’s totally archaic.
The princess bride
When it comes to weddings, at this point in my life, I have no idea what I should want.

REVIEW: EXTRACT
| September 02, 2009
I'm hard-pressed to say, though, whether Extract is a significant leap forward for Judge in terms of story or just not as funny as his earlier work.
SOUL MEN

Mac especially is a joy to watch, and a counterpoint to the humor elsewhere, as he breaks out Temptations-style moves with just the right mix of sly fun and respect for the music.
FILTH AND WISDOM
| October 27, 2008
As the lead character narrates his “filthy” story, and those of his London flatmates/neighbors, we hit upon boredom long before wisdom can arrive.
CITY OF EMBER
| October 15, 2008
Kids who see the truth when adults cannot is a central idea in children’s stories, but today’s kids would hardly recognize the grown-ups in Ember’s totalitarian society.

Nothing like walking out of a theater with your kid asking, “Daddy, what is suicide?”
