Review: The Other F Word

The original devil-may-care rebels enforce bedtime

Filmmaker Andrea Blaugrund Nevins spent intimate time on the road and at home with some prominent male punk rockers — Ron Reyes (Black Flag), Jim Lindberg (Pennywise), Duane Peters (U.S. Bombs), Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers) — to see how, several decades down the road from their raging, sex-and-drugs-and-anarchy days, they have adjusted to marriage and — ugh! — fatherhood. Perhaps surprisingly, they all seem to be pretty dedicated dads, bemused by the contradiction whereby they want their own kids to be decent souls and at least fairly obedient. And they are nicely philosophical if their progeny's taste in music runs to Hannah Montana and Justin Bieber. This charming, amusing documentary has its sad side too, when some of the punk protagonists confess that their anger resulted from abysmal abuse in childhood, horrors they work vigilantly not to repeat in their parenting.
