Are we dead yet? It would appear not, as the Final Destination franchise keeps slogging on, like a cross-country family road trip from hell (spoiler alert: somewhere around mile 600, Mom's going through the windshield). But the addition of 3D has breathed some life into this fifth installment. Although not everything is better in 3D, it turns out that deliciously over-the-top kills are. A metal pole as it javelins through a guy's skull and out into the theater, spraying the audience with 3D brain matter? Perfection. And Steven Quale's FD5 has some inventive new kills to keep the stale premise — attractive young people cheat death, piss off death, death comes calling — fresh and, more important, fun. Past the joys of the 3D splatter-fest, however (and Candyman's creepo extraordinaire Tony Todd as the county coroner who knows what's up), this latest Final Destination is just another dead end.
