There’s no accurate estimation of how many cult gems Bronx-and-Bay-Area-bred brothers George and Mike Kuchar have filmed since the late 1950s. The undisputed queer kings of low-to-no-budget cinema have always been as prolific as they are eccentric, and they continue to teach and create today.
For a documentary about D-movie mavens, It Came from Kuchar is expertly edited, and it serves as both a comprehensive archival overview for diehard fans and a thorough introduction for beginners. Jennifer Kroot’s already celebrated work won’t necessarily inspire all to rush and find rare copies of Pagan Rhapsody, The Devil’s Cleavage, and the quasi-pornographic Thundercrack.
But the message ringing loud and clear — that underground culture ain’t what it used to be — could not have been communicated through more fitting and likable characters.
