Sweetthieves formed in 2003 when Dave sold Hilary a '78 Musicmaster at his guitar shop in Providence, Rhode Island when they found a mutual love for all things dissonant, ominous, and full of music geekery. Hilary joined Dave and his long-time friend, Jay (and later, engineer, Mike) and they began crafting intense post-punk in the vein of Sonic Youth, Unwound, and Mission of Burma. Dave picked up his homemade guitar (lowered a fifth to a gutteral baritone) and Hilary a bass tuned up, and the lines became blurred. Add to that propulsive drums that don't merely hold down the groove but sing along, and you find that this is no ordinary power trio. Rather Sweetthieves turn into a single unit churning our interlocking streams and lines that weave around each other and eschew traditional harmonic placement. Sharp, yet oddly thick guitars, driving drums, and bass that both stomps and winds. Add to that their intense call and response vocals and pointed lyrics and you end up hearing a language all their own that is at once brand new yet familiar enough to draw you in. -M.P. Sweetthieves played their last show in January 2009 after the release of their second album, "Blood & Curses".
