Letters to the Portland editor: March 20,2009

Thanks for digging!

THANKS FOR DIGGING!
Just read the article ("
The Outsiders," by Christopher Gray, February 27) and wanted to say thanks. This is the first local write-up I have received (in any band that I have been in) where the writer actually did some digging. Being modest artists, we've never felt comfortable trying to promote our accomplishments to anyone. It was nice to read that you actually got in touch with Pitchfork in order to provide our sheltered little city with some light on what goes on outside of here. Anyway, great article and keep up the good work.

Within the last two weeks, both my girlfriend and I have been treated condescendingly by independent storeowners in Portland. The nature of our interactions has led us to question the very "Keep Portland Independent" philosophy that led us to relocate here in January.

The sad fact is that the Democratic and Republican parties in our state have been bought by large corporate interests through campaign donations and lobbying.
