If summer finally decides to arrive this year, it'll have a heckuva soundtrack waiting for it. The homonymous debut by the much-hyped Tennessee trio — self-christened Darlin sisters who do the whole rockabilly thang with wit and charm – is just what I'd expect to hear blaring from the open window of a car that cuts me off on Comm Ave on some disgustingly hot day. (The honky-tonk section of Comm Ave, of course.)
These gals get their sass from Wanda Jackson, their penchant for surnames from the Ramones, their covers from A.P. Carter and Uncle Dave Macon, and their hardnosed poetry from combining William Carlos Williams and Merle Haggard: "I got drunk and I ate a chicken/I ate a chicken I found in my kitchen/Not just the leg and not just the wing / I'd like to let you know that I ate the whole damn thing."
Their songs cover equally American concerns, such as gettin' crazy ("Wild One"), gettin' it on ("Red Light Love"), ekin' it out ("Snaggle Tooth Mama"), and warning those who want to hate on the moms ("Mama's Heart"). And if summer never arrives, Those Darlins should still be emanating from indoors, all hot and sing-a-long-like, where the sun is not required.

Local legends
Last call for ALEC K. REDFEARN and ALLYSEN CALLERY at the Speakeasy Under Local 121 (401.454.4581) tonight (the 24th), leading into a nice helping of local legends this weekend.
Joey Ramone remembered
On top of everything else that was a drag about the decade just past, there was this: in a three-and-a-half-year span, we lost three quarters of the Ramones. And then CBGB closed.
Arty crashers
Fucked Up's career is a game of dares they're winning. Over the past few years, the Toronto band have trashed a bathroom on an MTV broadcast, played a 12-hour set in a NYC boutique, reeled in random notables like David Cross, Bob Mould, and Nelly Furtado for Christmas charity singles, landed their vocalist Pink Eyes appearances on Fox News, and won the 2009 Polaris Music Prize.

Closing the book on the West Memphis Three
The Paradise Lost story began in 1993 with the discovery of the bodies of three West Memphis, Arkansas, children in a watery ditch, hogtied and mutilated. A confession led police to the arrest of three teenagers: Damon Echols, Jason Baldwin, and Jessie Misskelley.

Life after Pi
In contemporary literature, the Holocaust is the okapi in the room: looming and somehow irresistible.

When it was released in 1997, Cotton Mather's sophomore album racked up glowing critical huzzahs across the pond (not to mention big-ups from Oasis), yet dudded here in the States.

AIR | LE VOYAGE DANS LA LUNE
