P.O.S. must have known he had a near-classic on his claws with
Never Better
. So must the label folks at Rhymesayers, who spent a heavy grip manufacturing the kaleidoscopic interactive liner notes accompanying his new disc. The investment was well worth it; the punk-inspired P.O.S. has done the unthinkable this time around by designing cuts fit for legit hip-hop heads and hard-rock revelers alike. Few things enrage me more than rappers who think they're too good for hip-hop, and P.O.S. is hardly such a dolt. Furthermore, because of his experience with loud bands (he's easily one of hip-hop's top live performers), dude can tweak his voice to shine through every sonic forest he decides to pillage. "Purex" — a manic-depressive drum-spattered slap against convention — might be the best new track I've heard in 2009 . . . in any genre. And the pop-flavored "Goodbye" isn't far off, even though at moments P.O.S. sounds a bit too much like his exalted labelmate Brother Ali. I didn't like the last P.O.S album — and I still don't, having tasted it again this week — and that's just fine. This one's extra special: a picture-perfect portrait of what every rap-rock hybrid attempts to do but can't. Never better indeed.

Come clean
Jeru the Damaja vocalized underground agony before RZA declared that R&B stands for "rap and bullshit," before Dead Prez blasted "monotonous material," and way before Immortal Technique announced that he would soil a Def Jam development deal.

Busta Rhymes | Back on My B.S.
Increasingly surrounded by Soulja Boys and Lil Waynes, Busta Rhymes has of late taken on the look of hip-hop's Father Time.

Man at work
It's easy to manufacture illusions of rap stardom. Any MySpace whiteboy with a few grand can fill a mixtape with big cameos, and for a little more, guests will even shout his name out. But though such pay-for-spray practices have kept established artists eating they've also compromised the organic dynamics that once pushed the genre forward.

It's a bright sign for hip-hop when at least three promising subterranean sluggers ride flows comparable to that of the almighty Nas.
Two great flavors
"When I said that I wanted to use 'What We Do' as a single," Freeway explains, "people said it couldn't happen because it didn't have a hook. You know how the rest of that one goes."
Lady killer
Since the only way to write about female rappers is to harp on gender, here's the catchy kick-paragraph buzznote that we're playing: Dessa has more in common with black Republicans than you might realize. Although she's proud to hail from Venus, the poetic Minnesota songstress has refused to let prejudice paralyze her rise in a male-weighted industry.
Mathematics | Return Of The Wu & Friends
As chairman, muse, and beatmaker for the Wu-Tang Clan, RZA casts a shadow big enough to shade all but a few marquee members of his extended family.
