The undr quartet at Open Sound; Student finals at Beat Research
By SUSANNA BOLLE | December 9, 2008
Things will get quiet and then quieter still this Saturday at the Open Sound series at the Third Life Studio in Somerville. This installment features the subtle machinations of the improv ensemble the undr quartet (vocalist Liz Tonne, thereminist James Coleman, cellist Vic Rawlings, and trumpeter Greg Kelley). They'll be joined on the bill by the equally subtle low-volume improv duo nmperign (Kelley and saxophonist Bhob Rainey), who will collaborate for the evening with Vermont-based percussionist and composer JAKE MEGINSKY. Rounding things out are composer and contrabassist MICHAEL BULLOCK and ID M THEFT ABLE — the latter an ambient/electronics artist from Portland, Maine, sometimes noisy, sometimes not so much.
It's finals time — are you prepared? The students in DJ FLACK's Beat Research class at MassArt sure are. They've been sweating bullets, consuming copious amounts of coffee, and burning the midnight oil to finish their final projects, which they'll present at a special 18+ edition of Flack's Beat Research weekly at Enormous Room this Monday. Projects include videos, original tracks, and live performances; according to Professor Flack, they range from "circuit bent grime to circus-tent rhymes." (Be sure to check out the course syllabus on-line to see how Flack's been schoolin' them.)
