JUANA MOLINA | UN DÍA

Stars
The title first track on Juana Molina’s fifth album begins with her voice piercing the silence like an alarm: “One day I will sing the songs with no lyrics, and people can imagine for themselves whether it’s about love, disappointment, banalities, or Plato.” That day appears to be today, for English and Spanish speakers alike.
Un Día
takes everything the former Argentine TV star used to establish her musical style in the 12 years since she released her first album — her sometimes grainy voice, folk-leaning acoustic guitar, odd sampled sounds, and an impossible degree of looping — and shows Molina’s music in its weirdest, most mesmerizing, ideal version of itself. That includes her vocals, which may be the most important experimental instrument on the album. “Mo-mo, me-me, mo-mo,” she squeaks nonsensically on “Vive Solo,” over high-pitched horror-movie violins with a heavily traipsing synth bass line. “Los Hongos de Marosa” blends staccato “doots” and “tics” with echoed bells; “¿Quien?” ends with Molina’s voice multiplying infinitely on the same note. It’s ambient sonic voodoo, yet it retains plenty of pop’s most valued accouterment: hooks.

Rakim: Return of the King
As long as the Microsoft linguists who're responsible for updating Word are adding "Barack" and "Obama" to the spell-check dictionary, they should throw in "Rakim."

The rise of reggaeton
That beat you’ve been hearing — the steady boom-ch-boom-chick rattling the trunks of passing cars and moving masses in the club — isn’t just another fleeting hip-hop trend.
Dice-k Dictionary
The Red Sox’ signing of Daisuke Matsuzaka bolster Boston’s starting rotation and spawned a burgeoning industry in Japanese signage around Fenway Park.

The South shall rise . . .
The singing groups of the South of France draw on everything from mediæval pilgrimage chants and troubadour poetry to contemporary rap and ragga.
Sharp accents
Boston has its own vital scene of pan-American jazz and folk (hey, Mili Bermejo, Alex Alvear, Sergio Brandão, and everyone at Ryles on Wednesday nights!).
Seen + heard
These could easily be stories of alienation, of separation, of frustration, but they are not in the majority of the fare at the Maine Deaf Film Festival, to be held on Saturday, April 15, on USM’s Portland campus.

Not to downplay this year's Pride Week or anything, but the annual weeklong mélange of events geared toward New England's lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community is just one year shy of its 40th anniversary. Which makes it sort of like the night before Christmas.
