Stars
The “rare beat” crowd has been clamoring for a re-release of this legendary source of funky samples and DJ grooves, a purported soundtrack for the popular detective show that ran between 1967 and 1975. The improbably waltzing “Mannix Theme” (Schifrin’s second-best-known cult TV motif after the timeless “Mission: Impossible”) introduces a 1969 set of full-length, fully fleshed-out impressions on cues that the jazzman had composed for the program. A classically trained Argentine pianist and arranger brought to America by Dizzy Gillespie, Schifrin would go on to create the influential scores for
Dirty Harry, Bullitt,
and
Enter the Dragon
.
Mannix
prefigures his later work with something for every taste, from the relentless drive (and breakbeat!) of “Turn Every Stone” to gentle bossa nova to the wordless vocals and urbane piano of “The End of Night” (think an apocryphal collaboration between Mancini and Morricone). It’s a time capsule from an era when prime-time jazz briefly opened up to allow Schifrin’s eccentric flute-and-percussion arrangements (“The Shadow”) and even outright psychedelia (“Fear”).

Yasuaki Shimizu, David Cunningham | One Hundred
Imagine the kind of free jazz that would have developed in an alternate universe where mainstream classical music was defined by Michael Nyman's soundtracks to Peter Greenaway movies.

Tony Cennamo (1933-2010)
Tony Cennamo is synonymous with jazz radio in Boston. A fixture on WBUR from the early '70s to his last late-night show in 1997, Cennamo — who died on June 8 — was lively, outspoken, even outrageous. But his depth of knowledge was irreproachable.
Self help
In jazz, it’s always the iron age.
Got live if you want it
Mai Cramer was a beloved figure in local roots-music circles. For 24 years she hosted the popular show “Blues After Hours” on WBGH radio and was a tireless champion of the music.
Live, long and uncut
Here’s Miles performing not in the laboratory of the studio but in front of a live audience, unmediated by the mixing board or the razor blade.
Review: Throw Down Your Heart
Hip-hop, funk, and jazz artists are not the only cats who trace creative roots to Africa. So do such banjo-plucking white boys as Béla Fleck.
Boston music news: March 28, 2008
Erin Harpe has stepped out of her role as lead singer of the electro-funk band Lovewhip to record Delta Blues Duets .
Herbie Hancock
Herbie isn’t fooling around — the guest stars are here, yes, but Hancock is stretching out, with languid, meditative takes on the Mitchell songbook.
Celebrating the blues
The seed of a new festival in Providence has begun to germinate, thanks to Mark Millof.
