Last year at Great Scott, Qwel told the crowd, “I might look like a lumberjack, but I’m raw as fuck.” He wasn’t joking. Not only does he have that Midwestern Ewok look, but the Chicago rhyme icon is also the most linguistically developed cat in modern hip-hop. For this “spring” installment in his seasonal series — which has given us his exceptional

with beatsmith Maker — he relies on jungle DJ Kip Killagain’s epicurean, organic tapestries. Always one to see the forest and the trees, Qwel lassoes his masterfully orchestrated and intricately phonetic stream of consciousness around everything from existentialism to Christianity and contemporary rap trends. It will take months for dedicated Qwel fans to digest

; the allegorical value of “Big Eyes” and “Brainwashing” is so vast that interpretive possibilities seem endless. But with zero phoniness and even less filler, Qwel’s every word is worth analysis, and since he rides on serious but chummy production, it’s feasible to bump repeatedly until you choose your own adventure.

Guru death mystery
As mysterious as Guru was in his later years, the Roxbury-bred rap-and-jazz legend may soon prove to be more so in death.
Cornball bliss
Not until entering the Roxy a week ago Thursday did I comprehend what a normal kid feels the first time he sees a big-league ballpark.
Mad dissent
Few rappers practice what they teach, but Staten Island’s NYOIL — a former member of the early-’90s outfit the U.M.C.’s and current revolutionary rap stalwart — acts as loudly as he rhymes.
Homeboy Sandman | The Good Sun
If you’re not listening to Homeboy Sandman, you may be missing the most stylistically agile MC ever to spit. And if you don’t cop his official debut, then you’re depriving yourself of an album that’s worthy of more superlatives than could possibly fit in this or any other review space.
Kidz In The Hall | Land Of Make Believe
The Most Improved Player award goes to . . . Kidz in the Hall for finally living up to the hype that caught their sail in 2008.
Community: served
Without Solillaquists of Sound and the holistic hip-hop hamlet that its members cultivate within Orlando, their city would be home to little more than methadone retreats and plastic rodent ears.
The making of the Roots-versus-Antibalas Sound Clash
We're not previewing the Red Bull Sound Clash just because the buzz-beverage overlords supply Phoenix headquarters with enough voltage to paralyze a petting zoo.
The Narcicyst | Self-titled
I doubted that Montreal-based Iraqi MC Narcicyst would ever drop a more potent project than the 2004 Euphrates masterpiece Stereotypes Incorporated .
Gift rap
Boston hip-hop promoter Edu Leedz celebrated his 29th birthday in carnal mediæval-king fashion. The only thing missing was a three-pound turkey leg for Leedz to gnaw on.
Massachusetts: You might be living in a red state if
Scott Brown’s Senatorial victory is merely the latest sign that red tides are creeping upon our once-progressive Commonwealth. Don’t believe us? Consider that Kenny Chesney sells out Gillette Stadium every summer, and, of course, that wealthy Republican presidential hopeful with the fantastic hair was recently our Governor.
Rip Shop | The Authenticity
Rip Shop should be one of the first names you mention when recalling Boston’s early-2000s underground rap renaissance.
