PETE ROCK, NY'S FINEST

Although it’s been nearly 20 years since Pete Rock clambered out of the Bronx — his genre-defining style of chopped soul and gritty sheen in tow —
NY’s Finest
finds the legendary producer consistent, if not innovative. On the 15 tracks of his fourth solo outing in 10 years, Rock peddles familiar fare, a more precise mix of the same bleached-out horns and terse hooks he’s honed for years. The pedigree extends to the vocalists as well: Finest boasts some of the city’s most talented MCs, from Raekwon (“The PJ’s”) to Papoose (“Comprehend”), whose clipped cadences sound right at home on Rock’s tightly packed beats. Despite the inimitable bunch he’s gathered, Rock can’t resist the urge to take the mic on almost half of the album’s tracks, often plodding through lines that sound freshly plucked from a rhyme dictionary. The good news is that he often manages to upstage himself — his stilted delivery on “Don’t Be Mad” dissolves in a jumble of cackling guitars and slim bass drops. The better of these tracks — “Bring Y’All Back,” with its shuddering groundswells; the relentless “914” — provide ample reason for a nostalgia trip, even if Finest risks becoming a charade of New York’s halcyon days, now long past.

Termanology | Politics As Usual
This one should be considered a “How To” manual for regional rap stars who are poised to detonate worldwide.
Bring on the blues
There’s lots of music in store just around the proverbial corner for local music aficionados.
Swede stuff
To most rock fans, psychedelic means Jimi Hendrix and Arthur’s Lee’s Love, or Iron Butterfly’s “In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida” and Frigid Pink’s “House of the Rising Sun.”
Big business
Now that the music biz has licked its wounds from a nasty 2005, things are finally starting to heat up, and an indie-heavy winter is giving way to a more major spring.
Classic meets modern
The Audiocentrix just celebrated the release of their second disc last weekend.
Come together
Anyone who’s ever truly needed peace and quiet, understand the incredible sanctity of a public library.
Staff of life
Wheat’s debut, Medeiros, feels as fresh as yesterday, which is very fresh.
Souls of the departed
Last week was an especially dark one for Rhode Islanders and the local music community.
Star teamz
Mark it, dude: another banner year for the Boston music scene.
Keelay & Zaire | Ridin' High
Keelay and Zaire's tracks bounce lovelier than Joe Budden's girlfriend on that trampoline.
Singles scene
It’s old news: this series of tubes they call the Internet has revolutionized the way music is distributed.
