It’s easy to hate on Rick Ross for his sub-standard flow and tired materialism (he drives German automobiles and wears Japanese denim, don’t ya know), but he’s easier to appreciate if you think of him not as an artist but as a vessel for some of the best mainstream pop out this year. On
Trilla
we get “Speedin’,” a mindless-but-ecstatic romp buffered by an R. Kelly hook and a frantic beat courtesy of the Runners. “The Boss” is the first top-down anthem of the spring, and we mostly have J.R. Rotem’s beat and T-Pain’s chorus to thank for that. Solid J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League productions anchor the middle of the album: “Maybach Music” (featuring Jay-Z), “Billionaire,” and “Luxury Tax,” with Lil Wayne, Trick Daddy, and Young Jeezy. Nearly all of Ross’s guests outshine him, but the boss deserves credit — without him we wouldn’t have this album in the first place.

If you had your heart set on picking up a gently used chimp tuxedo or a suspicious child skeleton, you're outta luck
Fat Joe
For a 15-year rap veteran who brought the world the late Big Pun and has penned a long string of hits, Fat Joe sure has an inferiority complex.
The week in boners
With his new album expected to hit #1 on the Billboard charts this week, I think (Nasty) Nas is getting a bit swell-headed.

The Big Hurt: The week in beef (in brief)
A recessed economy means fewer chains to go around, so it's been a fine week for a-fussin'-and-a-feudin'.
Start with some Spice
The game is on for the reunited Spice Girls.
Culture clash
If there were two golden rules worth following for this reviewer gig, they’d be never conflate an artist’s backstory with her product, and never read other people’s reviews.
Pimp and circumstance
Some 45 minutes into the Wu-Tang Clan’s afternoon performance in Harvard Yard, Raekwon took a moment to describe his audience.
Keepin' it real
As I was walking up to Avalon a week ago Tuesday to see the Roots, a group of college kids crossed the street in front of me sporting backwards hats and puffy vests.
dDamage
The French hip-hop brother duo dDamage want your brain.

Despite being one of the most successful R&B singers of the decade — with six Grammys and three top-selling albums — John Legend is something of an oddball.

Rapper Esoteric has been getting lots of death threats via e-mail recently. But he’s not too worried about them, if only because of their elementary character.

One of the most influential hip-hop MCs of all time, Rakim brought rap from its sing-songy beginnings into its late-’80s golden era with his dense lyrics and virtuoso internal rhyme structures.
