AKROBATIK, ABSOLUTE VALUE
" alt="photo of 'AKROBATIK, ABSOLUTE VALUE'">
3.0
Stars
One of the hallmarks of Akrobatik’s style has always been his sincerity. The Boston MC’s previous album,
Balance
, packed so much raw, uncut positivity that Tipper Gore might have played it over tea with C. Dolores Tucker. (It’s also worth noting that Akrobatik’s debut EP had more bangers on it than many a “seasoned” rapper’s third or fourth full-length.) But Ak’s heartfelt approach doesn’t devolve into saccharine simplicity or one-dimensional platitudes — he proves that honest passion is as engaging and gripping as any gangsta pose.
Absolute Value
boasts a slew of A-list collaborations with big-timers like B-Real (of Cypress Hill), Chuck D, and Mr. Lif and even a Little Brother “reunion” of sorts. The lead single, “Put Ya Stamp on It,” offers a hot J Dilla beat and a vocal turn by conscious rap poster child Talib Kweli. But it’s not the guest list that makes
Absolute Value
priceless; it’s Akrobatik’s commitment to the music, culture, and community he loves.

Voices carry
For years, the idea that Boston hip-hop is about to blow has been a mantra for the local scene.
Reks in effect
Since jumping skills-first onto Boston’s rap scene seven years ago, Lawrence-born MC Reks has earned a variety of reputations.
The scene is now
As newspapers cede arbiter status to random bloggers with Fios and afternoons off, the function of polls like our humble offering must change out of necessity. What once was a forecast is now more like a diagnostic — it's anthropology versus tastemakery.
RADIx on the road
Call RADIx the little group who could.
Fakts One
Fakts never built a repertoire deep enough to secure his own specific sound, but on Long Range he proves he can dip into a variety of styles and cater tracks around any MC’s individual tastes.
Boston Hip-Hop Unity Fest 2010
An optimist would say that, despite some serious disappointments, last year’s Third Annual Boston Hip-Hop Unity Fest demonstrated just how peaceful the Bean rap scene really is.
Sean Price
Like MF Doom before him, Sean Price has switched personae, reconfigured his style, and given his underground hip-hop career a second life in recent years.
The Roots
Philadelphia’s the Roots first became known as hip-hop’s consummate contrarians, playing jazzy grooves on live instruments (no samples allowed) and waxing poetic about their distaste for the commercial mainstream.
Ghost world
“For those who don't know me, I’m known for using soul music,” Ghostface proclaimed. “I get a lot of pussy for it too.”
Open M.I.C.
Boston MCs are banding together under the banner of the Mass. Industry Committee.
Lil Wayne
All rappers ride on the claim that they’re the best, but on III Wayne makes his case.

Tiombe Lockhart has been hustling her hot vocal talents for an indie-neo-soul minute now, dropping arresting guest spots with PPP, Waajeed, and Kingdom.
BALAM ACAB | WANDER/WONDER
| September 27, 2011
"Witch house" isn't the best tag for an act to get saddled with straight out of the gate, and when Balam Acab's first EP, See Birds, dropped about a year ago, that term had less of its current flash-in-the-pan feel.
CHROMATICS | NIGHT DRIVE
| November 16, 2010
Independent Italo-disco throwback record label Italians Do It Better is rooted as deeply in punk-rock DIY as it is in dance 12-inches from the '70s and drugged-out '80s club-night afterparties.
HOW TO DRESS WELL | LOVE REMAINS
| November 02, 2010
In the dreamy, spacious world of How To Dress Well (one-man band Tom Krell), everything is light: the tone, the production, the vocals, the touch of each aural element.
