Stars
In their early days — as they broke out of clubs and into large theaters — R.E.M. were hit-or-miss live. But for more than a decade their concerts have boasted the power, authority, and joy that are expected from veterans whose catalogue holds some of the best songs of the alternative-rock era. So what happened? This two-CD/single-DVD on-stage retrospective (from a February 2006 show in Dublin) is a snooze. Sure, there are some great tunes: “Everybody Hurts,” the recent buzzy psychedelic gem “Electron Blue,” “Orange Crush,” “Losing My Religion,” and the early dream-popper “Don’t Go Back to Rockville.” None really catches fire, however, or stretches beyond its original skin. The audio and video recordings capture the same show, and seeing the fairly inert band on stage doesn’t help, especially since director Blue Leach, who also designs the art on R.E.M.’s behind-the-stage video screens, keeps them mostly in the dark. Unless you’re a diehard fan, wait for their new album in the spring, which the group are touting as a return to their early garage sound.

Here and now
No band ever made a late-career statement of purpose just by quoting “Louie Louie” — but it never hurts.
Local heroes
Alongside the Feelies, R.E.M., and the Replacements, Mark Mulcahy’s Miracle Legion was one of the most promising of the indie bands of the mid-’80s.
Déjà vu
Prepare yourselves: R.E.M. have decided to become a rock band again.
Crossword: 'POW!'
That old familiar sound
The Blue Van
The new album from Denmark’s the Blue Van doesn’t just look like a remnant of the ’60s, with its black-and-white photos of the scruffy quartet and weathered-looking cover, but it actually sounds like someone dug it out of a box of old Kinks and Cream LPs someone found in an attic.
IndieArts mania!
Head down to the Greenwich Hotel THURSDAY (the 16th) and lounge with local acoustic troubadour DANIEL CHASE and Boston's SARAH BORRELLO (her piano-driven cover of "White Rabbit" is insane); never a cover and always 21+, call 401.884.4200 for more.
Of Montreal
Now that the Apples in Stereo are reunited and have a new album coming out next month, Of Montreal can no longer lay claim to the distinction of being the only Elephant 6 band of note to outlive the once-sprawling psych-pop collective’s sad demise.
Bob Seger
“I will answer the wind,” Bob Seger sings in “Wait for Me,” a cut from his first new studio album in more than a decade.
Bringing up pop

Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, and Ray Price
With a collective age of 225, Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, and Ray Price live up to this concert DVD’s title, which it shares with an equally superb studio album released last year.
Singles scene
It’s old news: this series of tubes they call the Internet has revolutionized the way music is distributed.

This steaming pile of songs is emblematic of the state of mainstream country music — all artifice, no heart, calculated anthems written to formula and meant, like the film itself, to do no more than capitalize on the genre's current success and rob its undiscriminating fans.
