Blaqk Audio is Davey Havok and Jade Puget of AFI doing an ’80s-inspired synths-and-beats version of the emo-inflected goth-rock with which AFI have ascended to the top rank of Warped Tour acts. Havok’s Hot Topic howls sound great set against AFI’s live-band grind; the group’s high-drama approach to punk has done much to influence such younger, theatrically inclined groups as My Chemical Romance and Panic! at the Disco. Here, though, Havok’s vocals don’t seem nearly as distinctive: atop Puget’s lightweight grooves (few of which muster adequate levels of melody or texture), he could be some schmo on YouTube broadcasting his love of New Order and Depeche Mode from his bedroom. Worthy objects of admiration, to be sure, but ones better honored by AFI’s inventive rock than by Blaqk Audio’s so-so retreads. Indeed, last year’s AFI album,
Decemberunderground
, featured plenty of synths and beats, so it’s not entirely clear why the tracks on
CexCells
couldn’t have been turned into AFI songs.

Sunshine is so overrated.
Goth vs. skronk
The variation in sonic textures seemed not to matter much -- most likely, it was the point -- and an enthusiastic crowd packed the floor, surfing and slamming to both bands as best they could. AFI, Dillinger Escape Plan, and Nightmare Of You at Avalon, June 20, 2006
Sell your body, or sell your soul?
Desperation had driven me to this point. I was determined not to return to the soul-eating life of a cubicle serf, so, unemployed and grasping for tuition money, I’d become a Craigslist whore, selling my services to slick marketers wielding surveys and hawking focus groups.
Jeffree Star | Cupcakes Taste Like Violence
Why am I listening to this pitch-corrected-to-death excrement when we should all be watching Jeffree Star's Cunt of Love (or something to that effect) on VH1?
Gentleman callers
If the guys in Piebald had it their way, they’d probably rather be discussing social and/or political issues than Accidental Gentlemen . Piebald, "Oh the Congestion" (mp3)

Size matters
The Shins’ third album, Wincing the Night Away (Sub Pop), is as good as any rational mortal should expect an indie-pop album to be in the winter of 2007. The Shins, "Phantom Limb" (mp3)
Flake-overs
The craziest thing about the new Macy Gray record, Big , is Gray’s choice of coiffure.
Local influence
In a day when so much radio seems less and less local, WFNX remains in touch.
Weird and wired
It is, of course, difficult to attach a single sound to a city. And Providence is no exception.

Given the theory of de-evolution these Ohio brainiacs began expounding more than 30 years ago, it makes a sad kind of sense that Devo's first album since 1990's Smooth Noodle Maps offers such a charmless, base-level version of the band's synth-addled new wave.
