Hard-touring heavyweights on the Christian emo scene, Virginia Beach–based Mae play catchy, pretty pop-rock perfect for kids whose parents won’t let them wear their Death Cab for Cutie T-shirts to Sunday school.
Singularity
is the band’s major-label debut after two big-selling indie discs, and though it certainly bears the evidence of a slick, big-budget production job by Howard Benson (the bubblegrunge baron behind Daughtry), the album’s streamlined guitar roar and precision-geared melodic hooks aren’t a real departure for Mae — these guys have sounded like pros since they started. That’s no knock: like Billy Corgan back before he wanted to be in Pantera, frontman Dave Elkins has a knack for pairing whiny sensitive-dude vocals with twisty-turny riffs that never seem to stop unfolding. With its micro-managed licks-within-licks, opener “Brink of Disaster” could be an outtake from
Siamese Dream
,
whereas the deliciously strummy “Just Let Go” is a “Tonight, Tonight” for melancholy MySpace mavens.

Death Cab for Cutie and Franz Ferdinand
Refugees from the heady indie explosion of 2003, Franz and Death Cab are currently sharing space on a concert poster featuring an emo-like Band-Aid heart and a MySpace logo.

James Baluyut honed his indie-rock chops playing guitar in his older brother Richard’s mid-’90s band Versus, an underrated outfit whose lean, sexy jangle would’ve been well served by the blogosphere’s sponsorship.
Sweet but short
Chalk it up to a pre-emptive hunger for gluttony.
Hitsville UK?
Of the many, many excellent jokes singer Eddie Argos makes on the crackerjack debut by his London-based band Art Brut, the best might be the band’s name itself.
Indie-yuppie, Yindie, or Yupster?
"We call them ‘indie yuppies’ — Yindies for short."
Youth Group
It’s hard to nail down what makes Youth Group more compelling than other OC-approved mood merchants with guitars.
Start with some Spice
The game is on for the reunited Spice Girls.
Neo-new-what?
The real album of the year is a disc that probably didn’t cross many people’s paths in 2006, a Rhino comp titled Future Retro that pairs various DJs/electronicists (Richard X, Tiga, the Crystal Method) with classic new-wave tracks by the Cure, Echo & the Bunnymen, Depeche Mode, and New Order.

Given the theory of de-evolution these Ohio brainiacs began expounding more than 30 years ago, it makes a sad kind of sense that Devo's first album since 1990's Smooth Noodle Maps offers such a charmless, base-level version of the band's synth-addled new wave.

When Taio Cruz sings, "I can't live without you," in "Take Me Back," pop-song conventions tell us he's referring to a lover.
