THE HEARTLESS BASTARDS, ALL THIS TIME

The Heartless Bastards are a Dayton trio fronted by Erika Wennerstrom, an extremely shy woman with the voice of a blues crooner. Shortly after Patrick Carney of the Black Keys discovered them in an empty Akron bar, they released
Stairs and Elevators
to mixed reviews. The main knock: a “no frills” songwriting approach that lacked hooks. A few awkward attempts at a hit do appear on
All This Time
— “Into the Open” includes a forced piano theme and the title track is choked with synthesizers and cheesy love-song lyrics. But the downtrodden “Blue Day” and the instrumentally spare “Came a Long Way” have Wennerstrom in her comfort zone, singing about soul searching in guttural roars over three-chord guitar jams. So this sophomore effort isn’t simply a failed sellout. What else would you expect from a band who practice in their bassist’s janitorial-supply warehouse?

Heartless Bastards | The Mountain
"I made a lot of choices, most have not been wise," sings Erika Wennerstrom on the third album by her Ohio-based garage-rock trio.
Beyond the White Stripes
There’s a blues and old-school R&B resurgence rumbling in the indie-music underground, and it goes well beyond the icky thump of the White Stripes.
John Doe
The seminal American punk band X specialized in songs about love on the skids or on skid row.
Clearly Canadian
The indie label Secretly Canadian, which is secretly based in Indiana and has put out a number of stellar releases by the likes of Songs: Ohia and Scout Niblett, got a publicity boost when Antony and the Johnsons’ SC release I Am a Bird Now won the prestigious Mercury Music Prize last year.
None more black
"The music is our outlet, otherwise we’d all be in the nut house," says Black Angels' Christian Bland. The Black Angels, “The First Vietnamese War” (mp3)
No clock ticking
Rock and roll is a 15-year-old. Its makers may succumb to prudence and time but the music remains hormonal, idealistic, kinetic, and furious at anything you can think of to be pissed off about.
King Wilkie | King Wilkie Presents: The Wilkie Family Singers
Today, "risk" is less popular than George W. Bush, but this former Virginia band — now in NYC — are rolling the dice hard.
Making a beautiful racket
Where else could you see the Blizzard of '78 and I, Destroyer share the same stage?
2008 Listravaganza!
We are not at all sick of bands with animal names yet and seem to have a soft spot for Erykah Badu that we kept very hush about all year.
Spring cleaning
Without beating around the bush, here are three EPs worth hearing that have been sitting around the office a bit.
We got everything
Hopkins vented with Doomsday . Here he as produced something more measured, and, in the end, more long-lasting.

REVIEW: FANFARLO AT T.T. THE BEAR'S
| December 22, 2009
I wasn't expecting much from London indie-pop band Fanfarlo at T.T.the Bear's last Thursday evening. For the passed month, I had a live performance of theirs bouncing around my iPod, which I downloaded only because I thought their name was cool.
REVIEW: THE WALKMEN AT MIDDLE EAST
| September 23, 2009
It was strange to see the sparse instrumentation from which NYC’s The Walkmen drew their atmospheric, honey-dipped sound last Friday at the Middle East.
