Time Being | Ironworks

Nobody ever says anything nice about this crafty Canadian crooner without also observing that he’s nowhere near as famous as he deserves to be. Sexsmith fans love nothing more than using their hero as an example of what grown-ups who dig smart, sensitive pop should be listening to instead of Rob Thomas or Train. On his first album for Kiefer Sutherland’s new label, it’s not hard to hear why the Toronto-based folk-popster so often gets lost in the adult-contempo shuffle. His handsome melodies unfurl at their own unhurried pace, and his distinctive singing voice — a sort of quavery, half-swallowed gurgle — doesn’t do much to stoke any soulful-beefcake fantasies. But give Time Being time to be: in gorgeous, understated ballads like “Reason for Our Love,” he strikes mellow singer-songwriter gold whose old-time charms are worth savoring slowly.

Shhhh. There's a middle-aged English music legend sleeping in the shadows. Look a little bit closer and you might see the outline of his fedora and iconic Buddy Holly glasses. I'm not going to say his name, but he's just one of the members of rock's royalty who frequently lauds Toronto-based songwriter Ron Sexsmith.

West coasting
As I watched this season's 16 Project Runway hopefuls squinting into the setting sun during their champagne reception atop the Title Guarantee Building in Los Angeles, it was hard not to view the scene as a sad little metaphor for the state of the show. What's supposed to feel like the beginning of something new sure looks a lot more like the end of something old.
Daytrippers
In the cold light of objectivity, it’s hard to call 24 a “good” show.
Ane Brun
The second album by this Norwegian singer-songwriter blands out into coffeeshop background blur a little too often to earn a place next to more dynamic records by fellow folk-pop females like Beth Orton and Feist.
