Review: Gamer

It's a bit tough to swallow

This film from Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor features two fictional games: Society and Slayers, and both involve the mind control of volunteers by gamers who pay to play. In Society, the male (always) gamers force their female (almost always) human characters to perform girl-on-girl and other sex acts.

Slayers offers death-row prisoners a chance at freedom if they can survive 30 death matches. Kable (Gerard Butler), the one likable character, has lasted 27 matches, thanks to the skill of his bratty 17-year-old controller. But he learns, with the help of hippie hacker group Humanz, that the Slayers execs don't intend to let him win honorably, so he'll have to cheat.

He also learns that his destitute wife works for Society, and that her morbidly obese controller gets off on violence, especially against women. Poor editing makes Gamer overlong, and the negative portrayal of gamers is as hard to swallow as the cheesy plot.
