Sex Drive
The usual preoccupation with nut sacks and virgins

The usual preoccupation with nut sacks and virgins pervades this teen sexcapade, which cruises well-trodden roads from
American Pie
or
Porky’s
. To “lose it,” desperate 18-year-old “nice guy” Ian (Josh Zuckerman) poses as a beefcake jock on the Internet to woo Ms. Tasty (Katrina Bowden), who claims to be a hot swimsuit model. Ian’s macho older brother, Rex (James Marsden), has a different opinion: “A fat old guy who wants to ram you in the tailpipe.” Nonetheless, Ian “borrows” Rex’s prize muscle car (a vintage GTO) and sets off from Chicago to Knoxville to hook up with her, taking along best friend Lance (Clark Duke) and BFF Felicia (Amanda Crew), who’s also his longstanding crush, so you can see where
that’s
going. Shit happens (ever hear of a rolling brownout?), and a pit stop in an Amish village proves awkward. Director Sean Anders keeps the gears shifting, however, and the elusive goal of Ms. Tasty plays with expectations.
Sex Drive
doesn’t venture anywhere new, but it makes the same old scenery amusing again.

Review: The Box
First-semester social-science students would wince at the overreaching metaphors in Donnie Darko director Richard Kelly’s latest Rorschach test.
Review: Death at a Funeral
Once the enfant terrible of misogynistic movies (see 1997’s In the Company of Men ), Neil LaBute has moved on to remakes. His take on a 1973 horror classic ( The Wicker Man ) is either classically horrible or classically brilliant.

If you missed C&D1 , not to worry — few of the original cast are back.
Review: Hop
This candy-colored, candy-pushing combo of animation and live action imagines an Easter Bunny who's a cross between Santa Claus and Willy Wonka and an Easter with no mention of the Passion of the You Know Who.
Review: Straw Dogs
Remaking, polishing, and in effect housebreaking what should've remained untamed and feral, Rod Lurie's new version of the Peckinpah classic follows the original's story beats closely, and so the devil is in the details.

The Underworld series got long in the tooth early, but here, in the fourth installment (directed by Swede Måns Mårlind), it grows new fangs.
REVIEW: JOYFUL NOISE
| January 10, 2012
There's not much joy but there's plenty of noise of the rafter-rocking gospel singing variety in Tony Graff's musical dramedy.

For 50 years, Alvin and the Chipmunks have been driving parents nuts with their helium-infused banter and shrill bastardizations of pop music.
REVIEW: TRESPASS
| October 13, 2011
If Rod Lurie's errant remake of Straw Dogs didn't tickle your morbid fear of home invasion, then perhaps the latest from Joel Schumacher ( Falling Down ) might do the job.
