Morning Light
A curio of a documentary

The stock market’s tanking; the war in Iraq goes on with no end in sight. What better time for producer Roy Disney (nephew of Walt) to release this curio of a documentary about 15 Ivy League kids who get paid for the opportunity to sail in the Transpac — a 2500-mile race from California to Hawaii? Most of the crew look as if they’d leapt from the pages of Abercrombie & Fitch. Any dynamic that Steve, a motherless black kid from Baltimore, might inject gets washed away when he fails to make the 11-person race rooster. Beyond that selection process, there’s zero wind. The team sails, eats crappy food, and utters such inspirational inanities as “Bring it on,” and “That sucks all around.” If it weren’t for the ritzy camera work and the trumped-up soundtrack orchestrated by directors Paul Crowder and Mark Monroe, this tub would be dead in the water.

Review: Waking Sleeping Beauty
"It was the spring of 1994, and we were just finishing The Lion King , which would go on to earn great reviews and about three-quarters of a billion dollars at the box office," begins Don Hahn, that film's producer, in the fascinating documentary he directed and narrates.

Black Helicopter beat the odds
In the anything-goes '90s, it was tough to stick out like a sore thumb, but somehow Boston's Green Magnet School managed to do it — and do it like champs.
Bigger than legend
Whatever truth may still come through the legend of Nicholas Ray — America's cinema poet of outlaws, outsiders, and adolescents, a self-destructive artist ruined by alcohol, drugs, and being too good for Hollywood — it's no longer a truth that Ray needs.
Review: Despicable Me
First-time directors Chris Renaud and Pierre Coffin and the other filmmakers behind this slight but engaging kids' animated comedy have no ambitions to be original, but like their villainous hero, Gru (voiced by a borscht-accented Steve Carell), they insist on stealing only from the best.

Brotherly love
When it's right, "country" music has a way of bringing people together.
Tostado Sandwich Bar
Bring up Caribbean flavors and sandwich presses, and most folks will think of the Cubano, the roast pork/ham/cheese pressed sandwich that actually originated among Cuban ex-pats in Florida.
Eternia and Moss | At Last
At Last should finally cast the long-dominant Eternia into the undisputed top spot on the female MC food chain. But the Toronto-bred MC's sex appeal is secondary.

The Underworld series got long in the tooth early, but here, in the fourth installment (directed by Swede Måns Mårlind), it grows new fangs.
REVIEW: JOYFUL NOISE

There's not much joy but there's plenty of noise of the rafter-rocking gospel singing variety in Tony Graff's musical dramedy.

REVIEW: TRESPASS

If Rod Lurie's errant remake of Straw Dogs didn't tickle your morbid fear of home invasion, then perhaps the latest from Joel Schumacher ( Falling Down ) might do the job.
