Speed Racer
Another faulty family film

SPEED RACER: The kids might sit still for the first 15 minutes.
When Andy and Larry Wachowski pitched
The Matrix
to producer Joel Silver, they showed him the seminal anime
Ghost in the Shell
, claiming their ambition was to re-create it in live action. They probably didn’t do the same thing for
Speed Racer
. Who doesn’t have at least a passing familiarity with the adventures of the teenage racecar sensation and his extended family? The resulting film’s gee-whiz charms don’t wear thin for at least 15 minutes, leaving kids to squirm in (and out of) their seats for, oh, an additional two hours.
Into the Wild
’s Emile Hirsch takes a back seat in the title role, lost among seizure-inducing CGI sights that look like the descendents of Disney’s
Tron
–– if it had been raped by Warren Beatty’s
Dick Tracy
. Matthew Fox (who’s used to being
Lost
) doesn’t fare much better playing Speed’s mysterious shadow, Racer X, as they battle corporate greed, which is destroying both racing and worthwhile family films.

Review: Evangelion 1.0: You Are Not Alone
Once you get past the turgid and jargony title and backstory, and the dippy English dubbing, this episode of the popular Japanese anime series is really quite predictable and inane.

Review: Aliens in the Attic
As a kid, I was absurdly unpicky about my entertainment: shoddy '80s anime , reruns of This Old House , staring cross-eyed at our basement's pegboard wall to achieve a Magic Eye 3-D effect — these were all totally acceptable ways of whiling away an afternoon.
Review: Afro Samurai
Afro Samurai , which is based on the anime of the same title, follows Afro on his quest to find the Number Two headband.
The Big Hurt: The YouTube anime mystery
YouTube is now so shockingly complete in its catalogue of illegally uploaded music that it's like a cheap jukebox that plays every song, ever.

Uncertain Fey-t
This time last year, who would have guessed that Aaron Sorkin’s Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip would be dead by Emmy time and Tina Fey’s 30 Rock would be an Emmy winner?

REVIEW: THIS MEANS WAR
| February 16, 2012
What promises to be a modern Jules and Jim (until you realize it's directed by a 43-year-old who calls himself "McG") quickly devolves into Spy vs. Spy territory, only with incompetently staged and edited action and little of that ol' Mad magazine zing.
REVIEW: THE VIRAL FACTOR
| January 17, 2012
Made for a modest budget of $17 million — and feeling like it (who needs convincing explosions in an action movie?), Dante Lam's latest still gets the job done from a run-and-gun standpoint.

Too soon? For Stephen Daldry's 9/11 drama, the right time is "never."
REVIEW: THE DIVIDE
| January 10, 2012
Many a teleplay for The Twilight Zone threatened atomic Armageddon, and though Frontier(s) director Xavier Gens nukes New York in the opening shots of his latest thriller, he finds more inspiration in the horrors of human nature as seen in the old TV show's episode "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street."

Impossible Missions Force agent Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) returns to the screen in dramatic fashion as new teammate Jane (Paula Patton) and the returning Benji (Simon Pegg) break him out of a Russian prison.
