Al Pacino
Al Pacino may have
The Godfather
and
Dog Day Afternoon
to rest his laurels on, but some of his later endeavors, like this ill-conceived thriller, are best forgotten. Pacino seems to concur, wearily plodding through his paces as Jack Gramm, a forensics expert who must beat the clock or die. Years ago, Jack put away a sadistic serial killer known as the Seattle Slayer (Neal McDonough). Now, on the eve of the Slayer’s execution, several copycat murders occur. Then Jack receives the title death threat. Bodies and red herrings (with Alicia Witt, Leelee Sobieski, and Deborah Kara Unger among the unusual suspects) pile up. Through it all, he remains remarkably unnerved, as if a hot shower and a Scotch could make it all go away. Jon Avnet (
Fried Green Tomatoes
) helms the pic with a similar mindset.

New to DVD on January 17, 2006
With the possible exception of the days of Soviet Social Realism, people have gone to the movies to escape the daily grind, not relive it.
Smokin' Aces
Perhaps Joe Carnahan pitched his follow-up to 2002’s Narc as It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World by way of Quentin Tarantino, Guy Ritchie, and bad wigs. Watch the trailer for Smokin' Aces (QuickTime)
Flotsam and jetsam
Steven Soderbergh’s third “Ocean” film is a pastry of a movie, airy, insubstantial, and meant to fill in the gaps between heartier meals.

Review: Gomorrah
Matteo Garrone's Gomorrah is a jolting and utterly original take on the gangster movie.

While he refers to himself as a “dramatist” rather than a historian, Stone has positioned himself as Hollywood’s gatekeeper to America’s post-war past. The Underworld series got long in the tooth early, but here, in the fourth installment (directed by Swede Måns Mårlind), it grows new fangs.
REVIEW: JOYFUL NOISE
| January 10, 2012
There's not much joy but there's plenty of noise of the rafter-rocking gospel singing variety in Tony Graff's musical dramedy.

Jolie has loosely reworked the story of Romeo and Juliet in an infamous setting familiar from CNN but here seen from the inside.
REVIEW: ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS: CHIPWRECKED
| December 13, 2011
For 50 years, Alvin and the Chipmunks have been driving parents nuts with their helium-infused banter and shrill bastardizations of pop music.
REVIEW: TRESPASS
| October 13, 2011
If Rod Lurie's errant remake of Straw Dogs didn't tickle your morbid fear of home invasion, then perhaps the latest from Joel Schumacher ( Falling Down ) might do the job.
