Michael Caine and Demi Moore
Demi Moore in a British heist caper and dressed like Jackie O? Strange but true, and it works as Moore plays Laura Quinn, an American businesswoman up against the glass ceiling in 1960s London. Quinn toils ceaselessly for the fat cats at an international diamond exchange. Her thanks? She’s passed over and, later, played for the goat when a mine disaster triggers political repercussions with South African and Russian counterparts. The “blood diamond” edge never gets honed; instead, the film moves into bank-job territory when Mr. Hobbs (a cagy Michael Caine), the kindly janitor, enlists Laura’s help in jacking the vault. Veteran director Michael Radford (
Il postino, Nineteen Eighty-Four
) navigates the twists and turns adroitly, and given the muddled premise, this is a slick piece of filmmaking. But all the sparkling facets don’t make it a precious gem.

Flotsam and jetsam
Steven Soderbergh’s third “Ocean” film is a pastry of a movie, airy, insubstantial, and meant to fill in the gaps between heartier meals.
Sleuth
Think Carlton Fisk and Thurman Munson.
Review: Harry Brown
It's formula with a vengeance.
The Bank Job
He's both smart enough to sense he’s being played by people far more powerful than he is and dumb enough not to walk away. Kind of like us moviegoers.
Shuffling off to infamy
Tasering Donte . Sounds like a movie title, doesn't it?
Review: Sorority Row
You can't fault young actresses (here including Rumer Willis, the daughter of Demi Moore and Bruce Willis, and Briana Evigan, who's nearly Moore's double) for jumping into a mindless movie like this one from Stewart Hendler.
Review: The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 (2009)
This meticulously detailed update of the 1974 cult-favorite heist drama retains some of that film's taut pacing and dry humor, and it even boasts some decent performances.
Bobby
The Camelot mythography lives on in writer/director Emilio Estevez’s earnest bid for significance, a cliché’d collage portrait of LA’s Ambassador Hotel on June 4, 1968. Watch the trailer for Bobby (QuickTime)
When sportscasters attack
Each sports season carries a relatively small number of sportscaster arrests, but the ones we do get it are usually memorable.
Cold War Kids
Don’t be surprised if you find yourself thinking you’ve heard these guys somewhere before.
God Grew Tired of Us
Back in the ’80s, long before Darfur became a word linked with genocide in the Western media, the Islamic north waged a bloody campaign against the Christian farmers. Before there was darfur: Around the world. By Tom Meek.

The Underworld series got long in the tooth early, but here, in the fourth installment (directed by Swede Måns Mårlind), it grows new fangs.
REVIEW: JOYFUL NOISE
| January 10, 2012
There's not much joy but there's plenty of noise of the rafter-rocking gospel singing variety in Tony Graff's musical dramedy.

For 50 years, Alvin and the Chipmunks have been driving parents nuts with their helium-infused banter and shrill bastardizations of pop music.
REVIEW: TRESPASS
| October 13, 2011
If Rod Lurie's errant remake of Straw Dogs didn't tickle your morbid fear of home invasion, then perhaps the latest from Joel Schumacher ( Falling Down ) might do the job.
