Semi-pro
A grand idea

This Will Ferrell send-up attempts to do for bush-league basketball what
Bull Durham
did for baseball and
Slap Shot
for hockey. It’s a grand idea, set in the ’70s, as the ABA is on the brink of imploding, with a few of the remnants (the Nets and the Spurs) being taken into the NBA. Ferrell’s Jackie Moon is owner, coach, and power(less) forward of the Flint (Michigan) Tropics. Although the team is Moon’s ultimate vanity project, he’s sensible enough to bring in ABA legend and one-time Celtics benchwarmer Ed Monix (Woody Harrelson) when the Tropics must rise from last place to fourth to make the NBA cut. The nostalgic backdrop goes far (funk ballads and ’fros galore), but first-time director Kent Alterman doesn’t know whether to play this one from the heart or for raunchy laughs: there’s plenty of sass, not enough soul. Harrelson and André Benjamin as the Tropics’ marquee player provide the latter while Ferrell hams his way to the hoop.

The 100 unsexiest men 2007: 100-91
These guys couldn't turn on a radio
Ferrell behavior
Will Ferrell might spend a lot of his on-screen time with his pants off, running and screaming, but in person, promoting his new movie Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby , he can be as buttoned down as Tony Snow before the White House press corps.
Worst in breed: Movies
Who are the unsexiest movies men of 2007?
Step Brothers
Step Brothers should answer any doubts as to whether Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly are cinema’s reigning lovable losers.
Blades of Glory
Will Ferrell plays a redneck star athlete who’s dumb and adored and loses his trousers a lot and meets his match in an effete competitor.
Curious George
How do you convey the whimsical complexity of Margaret and H.A. Rey’s beloved chimp if the celluloid version can’t utter a word?
Stranger than Fiction
What’s stranger than fiction? Some might say meta-fiction, the “avant-garde” genre that’s actually older than Don Quixote, in which a work of fiction self-consciously refers to its own artifice. Watch the trailer for Stranger than Fiction (QuickTime)
Crossword: ''The worst of 2007''
Let us look back, and feel shame.
Blue movie?
Despite what the people behind Talladega Nights might tell you, the film makes its target audience — NASCAR fans, rednecks, Red Staters of various descriptions — look like a bunch of idiots. | January 10, 2012
There's not much joy but there's plenty of noise of the rafter-rocking gospel singing variety in Tony Graff's musical dramedy.

For 50 years, Alvin and the Chipmunks have been driving parents nuts with their helium-infused banter and shrill bastardizations of pop music.
REVIEW: TRESPASS
| October 13, 2011
If Rod Lurie's errant remake of Straw Dogs didn't tickle your morbid fear of home invasion, then perhaps the latest from Joel Schumacher ( Falling Down ) might do the job.
