Charlie Bartlett
A rich kid on the road to comeuppance

Hollywood loves to send rich kids on the road to comeuppance, from
The Magnificent Ambersons
to
Ferris Buehler’s Day Of
f and
Igby Goes Down
. They’re all confronted with the same question — why do kids who’ve been given so much squander their golden opportunities? Is it lack of love? A festering family secret? Charlie Bartlett (Anton Yelchin, the victim in
Alpha Dog
) has been kicked out of a string of prep schools and is now going public — chauffeur, coat and tie, and all. Sure enough, he gets his ass beat, but when he starts dealing in Ritalin, Zoloft, and life coaching, he becomes a superstar and a thorn in the side of Principal Gardner (Robert Downey Jr.), a situation that’s exacerbated when he starts dating Gardner’s daughter, Susan (Kat Dennings). Director Jon Poll and writer Gustin Nash don’t offer a fresh spin on the material. Yelchin, however, can claim a breakthrough, and Hope Davis adds sass as Charlie’s pill-popping mom.

A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints
At the outset of Dito Montiel’s adaptation of his own memoir, we meet Dito (Robert Downey Jr.) in LA in 2005 as he reads from his “wonderful book.” Watch the trailer for A Guid to Recognizing Your Saints (QuickTime)

2009 Oscar predictions
This year the Oscars will honor the men who suffer for our sins and the women who don't wear make-up.

"Eventually, I think Mike should work with kids who have backgrounds similar to his, because he'd be great with them. They'd look up to him."
Review: Sherlock Holmes
In its own way an ideal holiday blockbuster for the moderately educated, the new light-footed overhaul of Sherlock Holmes is three parts self-satisfied mixer to one part hard storytelling, and if anything, the film's popular trailers should have deterred you from expecting strong drink.
Review: Fighting
Call this a guide to recognizing your sophomore slump. Dito Montiel won the Directing Award at Sundance with his autobiographical 2006 debut, A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints , but that film had Robert Downey Jr. and Chazz Palminteri.
Autumn peeves
With pundits already reading political significance into summer blockbusters like The Dark Knight (“Is Batman a stand-in for George Bush? Discuss.”), the meatier movies of fall arrive not a moment too soon.
Review: The Soloist
A small, real-life drama about a homeless musical genius set in the urban present.
Review: Iron Man 2
Maybe I’m just relieved that it wasn’t in 3-D, or maybe actor Justin Theroux (frequent David Lynch collaborator and co-scripter of Tropic Thunder ) is just a better writer than the law firm of scribes that pasted together the original, but Jon Favreau’s sequel to his creaky adaptation of the rusty Marvel standby Iron Man restores my lack of faith in superheroes.
Apocalypse now and then
With Snakes on a Plane and World Trade Center opening on the same day, this summer won’t be offering the usual escapist fare.
Spring brakes
Funny how spring movies can mirror the options of spring break.

The latest dark comedy from Bobcat Goldthwait tackles both vapid celebrity culture ( i.e. , Paris Hilton, the Kardashians, and American Idol ) and the indignity of being an office drone.

Peter Lord, animator behind claymation staples Wallace & Gromit and Chicken Run , directs this very British, very dry romp on the high seas during the time when Britannia did indeed rule the waves.

Dan Lindsay and T. J. Martin's Oscar-winning documentary about an underequipped high-school football team competing against big-time programs across Tennessee offers a potent contemplation on race and opportunity.
REVIEW: DR. SEUSS' THE LORAX
| March 01, 2012
Regrettably, this team loses a lot of Seuss's quirkiness, though not the message about corporate greed and slash-and-burn imperialism.
