Kate Hudson and Mathew McConaughey
Perhaps the biggest fools in this nautical
National Treasure
wanna-be are venerable actors Ray Winstone and Donald Sutherland, who not only are wasted but at times look inane. As for Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson, they should have a sit-down with their agents. The two play treasure hunters, “Finn” Finnegan and his estranged wife, Tess, who are searching for a Spanish wreck off the Florida Keys. Also going for the gold are Finn’s former mentor, Moe Fitch (Winstone), Sutherland’s snooty moneybags, Nigel Honeycutt, and a thuggish rap mogul (Kevin Hart) whom Finn is into for a few fins. Not a worthless premise, but director Andy Tennant (
Hitch
) and his posse of writers don’t know whether to play the adventure for laughs, drama, or action. Still, Hudson and (the ever shirtless) McConaughey manage to remain afloat in this mess, and Alexis Dziena helps buoy it as Honeycutt’s ditzy celebutante daughter — an obvious poke at Paris Hilton.

Primary concerns
The last thing people are looking for when they go to the movies is a reminder of the political crapola they are trying to escape.
New to DVD on January 17, 2006
With the possible exception of the days of Soviet Social Realism, people have gone to the movies to escape the daily grind, not relive it.
Interview: Bobcat Goldthwait
"Not many people may know of my films, but I think they may have more legs than, like, a Kate Hudson movie."
Failure To Launch
The rumor is that Matthew McConaughey and Sarah Jessica Parker didn’t get along while making this film, and it shows.
You, Me and Dupree
Formulaic might have been okay. But this vacuous comedy about a predictable slacker who moves in with a pair of lame-ass newlyweds isn’t nearly formulaic enough. Watch the trailer for You, me and Dupree (QuickTime)
Review: Ghosts of Girlfriends Past
Jon Lucas and Scott Moore must have a pathological hatred of the winter holidays.
Shake Your Booty for a Bounty
Like in other businesses, family connections are important in filmmaking. Just ask Kate Hudson and Michael Douglas.
Review: Bride Wars
There are no pleasant surprises in this partly-Boston-shot Gary Winick film.
Review: The Killer Inside Me
Jim Thompson might be the darkest of noir writers, but Michael Winterbottom's version of Thompson's 1952 novel reduces its mirthful nihilism to lurid unpleasantness.
Bogus Bess
“History,” Winston Churchill told us, “is written by the victors.”
Four to watch for

| January 24, 2012
The Underworld series got long in the tooth early, but here, in the fourth installment (directed by Swede Måns Mårlind), it grows new fangs.
REVIEW: JOYFUL NOISE
| January 10, 2012
There's not much joy but there's plenty of noise of the rafter-rocking gospel singing variety in Tony Graff's musical dramedy.

Jolie has loosely reworked the story of Romeo and Juliet in an infamous setting familiar from CNN but here seen from the inside.
REVIEW: ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS: CHIPWRECKED
| December 13, 2011
For 50 years, Alvin and the Chipmunks have been driving parents nuts with their helium-infused banter and shrill bastardizations of pop music.
REVIEW: TRESPASS
| October 13, 2011
If Rod Lurie's errant remake of Straw Dogs didn't tickle your morbid fear of home invasion, then perhaps the latest from Joel Schumacher ( Falling Down ) might do the job.
