Teeth
An uncomfortable horror/comedy hybrid

TEETH: Horror and toothless laughs.
"Let me see your grill: The origins of the vagina dentata." By Greg Cook.
Actor and first-time filmmaker Mitchell Lichtenstein goes where few directors have dared (in mainstream movies, at least), opening up a sticky subject for an audience unprepared for the nasty bite that awaits. In creating an uncomfortable horror/comedy hybrid based on another hybrid –– the vagina dentata –– his film from his own script is as clumsy as first-time sex, but not without its pleasures. Chief among them is the performance of Jess Weixler as Dawn, a chastity-promoting high-school student who begins to wrestle with her pent-up sexuality when hunky Tobey (Hale Appleman) transfers to her school and joins her abstinence group. Portentous shots of their town’s nuclear reactors and a damp, mysterious cave waiting to be entered (wink!) at the local swimming hole elicit nervous laughter, but Lichtenstein blows his load early. Nearly 45 minutes of expectant foreplay culminates in an unsatisfying, messy anti-climax that’s, well, toothless.

Let me see your grill
If there’s one thing the new horror flick Teeth teaches us, it’s that nothing sours a romantic soirée like a vagina dentata.
Medicine men
What if a poem had the power to heal loneliness?

This explains a lot: May was National Masturbation Month, first held by the San Francisco-based sex shop Good Vibrations in 1995, and celebrated nationwide. (Some places even hold Masturbate-A-Thons to raise money for local HIV- and AIDS-prevention organizations.) Is that why everyone's been so giddy of late?
Celebrating the original DIY
Like you, dear readers, I was apparently too busy exploring south of the border to even realize it, but I just found out that May was National Masturbation Month.
39. Jim Bob Duggar
This conservative Baptist, former Arkansas state legislator, and star of TLC reality stinkers — including 14 Kids and Pregnant Again and 18 Kids and Counting — evidently has little regard for his poor wife, who, to date, has delivered four more children than the octo-mom. Dude: enough already! Oddly, Duggar’s children are not permitted to watch television — though they are allowed to waste other people’s time with their own pointless programs and Today Show appearances.
Slow + steady
Before grown-ups start talking to kids about certain things, a parent observes, kids start talking to grown-ups.
Flashbacks, January 27, 2006
The Phoenix has been covering the trends and events that shape our times since 1966.
McCain has a double standard on Viagra and birth control
McCain backed legislation allowing Medicaid to cover Viagra for men, while forbidding the federal health-insurance program for the poor from covering birth control pills for women.
Reading roundup
This fall’s regional literary scene will see abstinence and desire, ghosts and dykes, convicts and Christians, toxic water bottles and yummy food.
We can be heroes
Until now, the only way to use your ovaries to combat domestic violence was to yank ’em out, throw ’em in a sack, and use them to wallop an assailant.
GLAD all over
The Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders (GLAD) this past weekend honored Boston Phoenix founder and publisher Stephen M. Mindich.

REVIEW: THIS MEANS WAR
| February 16, 2012
What promises to be a modern Jules and Jim (until you realize it's directed by a 43-year-old who calls himself "McG") quickly devolves into Spy vs. Spy territory, only with incompetently staged and edited action and little of that ol' Mad magazine zing.
REVIEW: THE VIRAL FACTOR
| January 17, 2012
Made for a modest budget of $17 million — and feeling like it (who needs convincing explosions in an action movie?), Dante Lam's latest still gets the job done from a run-and-gun standpoint.

Many a teleplay for The Twilight Zone threatened atomic Armageddon, and though Frontier(s) director Xavier Gens nukes New York in the opening shots of his latest thriller, he finds more inspiration in the horrors of human nature as seen in the old TV show's episode "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street."
REVIEW: MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – GHOST PROTOCOL

Impossible Missions Force agent Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) returns to the screen in dramatic fashion as new teammate Jane (Paula Patton) and the returning Benji (Simon Pegg) break him out of a Russian prison.
