This Christmas

Christmas movies have always meant boring white people going home to settle lifelong resentments and eat ham. It’s only fair that black folks get a crack at re-enacting these insipid mechanics. As artificially homy as a plug-in air freshener, writer/director Preston A. Whitmore II’s
This Christmas
fills the bill. The unwieldy ensemble story has no fewer than six grown kids staying with mom (Loretta Devine), each cramming hangers-on and manufactured conflict into a bland, overstuffed lump. There’s not a single moment that doesn’t bristle with exposition and cliché — only Idris Elba as Quentin and Delroy Lindo as Joe give the film’s Hallmark cribbing anything resembling life.

Hope springs infernal
Given the current economic climate, spring this year is a season more of dread than of hope for change.
Crossover
Streetball in its various forms has become a bona fide underground sport; Crossover pumps it up with hip-hop flash and contrivance. Watch the trailer for Crossover (QuickTime)
Review: Obsessed
As a troubled husband and wife, Idris Elba and Beyoncé Knowles don't lack for chemistry and credibility. You can't say as much for the film in which they play these roles.
Review: The Losers
Why is it that if a child kills 25 bad guys, as in Kick-Ass , the movie gets rated R and arouses moral indignation, whereas if (SPOILER!) a bad guy kills 25 children, as in Sylvain White’s adaptation of the Andy Diggle graphic novel, the film gets a PG-13 and no one seems to care?
Botswana beauty
As any fan of traditional mysteries knows, a good detective must pay attention to details. And Precious Ramotswe, the founder of the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency, finds that truer than most.
Daddy’s Little Girls
Tyler Perry secured two likable leads for his new film, and they make Daddy’s Little Girls more enjoyable than it has any right to be.
Earning his wings
Delroy Lindo is only 6’3”, but he plays a lot bigger on screen.
Review: Up
Nobody these days tells stories as cinematically as do the people at Pixar. At least for the first half-hour of their films.

MAY YOU AND PORTLANDIA BE VERY HAPPY TOGETHER!
| February 15, 2012
Thanks to Portlandia I now know way too much about you guys and your grody inner lives. It's not the show itself — it doesn't have that power. It's your horrifying enthusiasm for the show that has granted me this mirror.

The dance sequences suffer for the lack of gloss, but it’s a fair trade because tiny bursts of drama erupt whenever the plot looks the other way.
