“It’s more memorable to almost kiss on a first date,” agoraphobic widower Henry (John Corbett) reflects to his lovelorn daughter, Audrey (Agnes Bruckner), and her multiple-sclerosis-stricken best friend with beauty-queen ambitions, Calista (Kelli Garner). Kind of like it’s better to almost see this film than to actually watch it. “I’m sure glad we decided not to bask in that overcooked trailer park full of broken dreams under the New Mexico sun and enjoyed the hot passions of Volver instead!” you might say, before concluding, “Isn’t this coming out on DVD in a few weeks?” Or you might wonder why recurrent nerd Justin Long (Dodgeball, Accepted) has been cast as a “hottie” college hoops star with the unlikely moniker of “Mookie.” That is, till Audrey proclaims, “My mom’s dead, my dad’s drunk, and my best friend’s forsaken.” Then you’ll realize that Jason Matzner’s Dreamland should have been a country-music song — and that’s one tune that’ll never play in this town.
