WINDOW OF THE REVOLUTION: Garcia in
The Lost City
.
In 1990, Sydney Pollack refashioned Michael Curtiz’s
Casablanca
, setting the action during a period of political upheaval in
Havana
, with Robert Redford doing little to erase memories of Humphrey Bogart. Not content with aping one beloved classic, Andy Garcia’s musical journey through the Cuban Revolution pays homage to no less than Francis Ford Coppola’s
The Godfather
. He directs himself in the initially apolitical role of tuxedo’d, piano-playing nightclub owner Fico Fellove, who’s drawn into both conflict and romance; his younger brothers (Enrique Murciano and Nestor Carbonell) become revolutionaries while his beautiful sister-in-law (Inés Sastre) becomes the “Widow of the Revolution.” Along the way, Dustin Hoffman plays Meyer Lansky as Dustin Hoffman and, as a shorts-clad Greek chorus, Bill Murray wanders in from another film. Self-indulgent, overreaching, and simply awful.

Learning by doing
The way kids say, “I wanna be an astronaut, I wanna be a fireman,” Cambridge’s Karen Schmeer insisted, “I can be a film editor.”
Lions for Lambs
Just because the debate over Iraq isn’t taking place anywhere else doesn’t mean you should put it in a movie.
And justice for one . . .
“I’m not a miracle worker, I’m a janitor.”
EXCERPT: King Creole
Gerald Perry writes on King Creole' s neverending B list movie status.
Off with their heads
The signs are getting bleak for the man in the White House and the party in power.
Body of Lies
For a film dealing with Intelligence, Body of Lies has little enough of its own.
Devine DVDs
Sure, we all know Get Smart! is out on DVD in time for the holidays, and the Superman films (all of them, going back to 1948), and Mission Impossible: The Ultimate Missions Collection , sure, sure, as if you could miss the bleating sirens of studio publicity.
Review: A Nightmare on Elm Street
The last of the ’80s horror icons to be murdered by producer Michael Bay’s “re-imaginings,” Freddy Krueger was the one least in need of a makeover.
Rí!
In Kings , which is getting six screenings at the MFA, it’s 1977, and six spry Irish lads are sailing toward London, buoyed by grand expectations.
Win or lose?
The Korean War is the altercation I, like most Americans, know least about, except that the US once again sent in troops, and it was against godless Communists rather than Allah-driven terrorists.
TV personality
This smarmy actor is most famous for his role in Happy Gilmore , but he shines (in an unctuous way) elsewhere, too.

REVIEW: THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL
| May 03, 2012
Filled with Indian (and British) clichés, it is nonetheless a pleasant diversion that doesn't involve special effects or 3D glasses.
REVIEW: BLUE LIKE JAZZ
| April 12, 2012
A faith-based film directed by Christian recording artist Steve Taylor, adapted by Taylor and Donald Miller from the latter's 2003 memoir, this micro-budgeted indie tries to appeal to everyone by not offending anyone . . . except those who like movies.
REVIEW: JIRO DREAMS OF SUSHI
| April 04, 2012
Eighty-five-year-old Jiro, with his unchanging expression and bald pate, resembles a wizened turtle. Leaving home at age 9 and forced to fend for himself, he would become the world's greatest sushi chef.
