A taste of Haley House Bakery Café
August 15
By

| August 8, 2007
What’s better than buying fresh produce at your local farmers’ market, taking it home, and whipping up dinner? Heading to the “Celebrating Summer’s Bounty” dinner at the
HALEY HOUSE BAKERY CAFÉ
(12 Dade Street, Roxbury) on August 15, at 7 pm, and letting chef Didi Emmons cook it for you. The event benefits the Federation of Massachusetts Farmers Markets and features a four-course menu of vegetarian cuisine. The cost is $60, or $75 with wine; call 781.893.8222 or e-mail
martha@massfarmersmarkets.org
for tickets.

Blunch
Blunch is not the most mellifluous name, merely a pragmatic one for a place that serves breakfast and lunch.
Sichuan Garden’s ox meat and tripe with roasted-chili peanut vinaigrette
Decades of bad choices made by diners have made it hard for non-Chinese-speaking eaters to gain the respect of a cook in a Chinese-American restaurant.
The Paddock
Some long-surviving restaurants seem fossilized in amber: the décor, the menu, even the patrons look as though they haven’t changed in decades.

I’m thinking about potatoes. Maris Pipers to be precise.
A taste of Stella
The fact that they’re going to be serving fried artichoke hearts is enough to get us.
Watermelon Slim and the Workers
The results of this year’s annual blues awards, the Handys, won’t be in until May, but expect this ex-Bostonian (né Bill Homans) to walk away with an armful.
A taste of Redbones
Unless you’ve got a fat wad of cash or some great connections, you’re probably not holding tickets to the Red Sox home opener.
Bed time
It’s bed time — oyster beds, that is. On September 12, Harvest Restaurant presents a four-course locally harvested oyster dinner.
Rhode Island has a prominent place in diner history
Rhode Island figures heavily in The History of New England Diners , a production of Rhode Island PBS.
Living la vida local
I am a fan of convenience.
Starboard Galley
Clam shacks and chowda houses are quintessential Rhode Island, and an eatery named the Starboard Galley couldn’t be more nautical.
