Wings Over Brookline

Flying high on Harvard Street
By JEREMY SAUER  |  September 6, 2006

It’s a tried-and-true formula: where there are college students, Buffalo wings are never far behind. So no wonder the crew of Wings Over … has landed on Harvard Street to open their first Greater Boston franchise.

Although new to the area, the Wings concept has invaded many a college town. And it’s easy to see why. The décor plays on an aviation theme, with shiny metal walls and so many photos of Naval aircraft that you half expect to see Goose and Maverick behind the counter. As if that weren’t enough, every menu item is named after an aircraft model, with the size of each item directly proportional to that of the plane.

But ambiance isn’t the reason to visit Wings. Go for the huge portions, cheap prices, and fried-to-order chicken served with a squadron of sauces (22 in all). The Buffalo-style hot sauces offer five levels of heat, from Wimpy (actually not so wimpy) to the black-, white-, and red-pepper-powered Afterburner. Those not in the mood for a capsaicin rush will enjoy the thyme-centric Jamaican jerk and a sticky, sweet honey barbecue. Another favorite is the garlic Parmesan wings, which pack so much cheese taste you might mistake them for chicken-flavored Smartfood. Prices vary from $5.49 for seven wings to $62.99 for 120 wings. For the fowl-phobic, there’s also a solid black-Angus burger ($4.99) and fall-off-the-bone St. Louis–style pork ribs ($8.99/half rack).

With a couple of tables and a counter area, Wings Over Brookline is a nice place for a quick bite, but with no delivery charge (or minimum order), you might as well have them fly over to you.

Wings Over Brookline, 477 Harvard Street, Brookline | open daily, 11 am – midnight | Delivery and pick-up are available daily until 2 am | 617.264.9464.
