"Black Indians In Space: The Constellation," mixed-media collages by James Montford

60 Valley St #5, Providence, RI   (view map)

James Montford’s “Black Indians In Space: The Constellation” is an exhibit of mixed-media collages which delve into Native American and African American stereotypes. “I am acutely interested in and fascinated by the issues raised by the work in addressing false societal constructs — racism as it affects community and environments — and the persuasiveness of myth,” Montford says. “My practice is focused on the deconstruction of stereotyped images as they relate to people of color in the global sense.” He also notes, “I do not see the work as political, but as being more closely related to ‘a conversation’ in its broadest and most inclusive context.” The show is at Yellow Peril Gallery, 60 Valley St #5, Providence, through July 13 (the opening reception is on June 7 from 6-9 pm) | 401.861.1535 |
