A Bronx Tale, starring Chazz Palminteri

1 Avenue of the Arts, Providence, RI   (view map)

Chazz Palminteri’s A Bronx Tale that is a one-man show that is filled with characters the author encountered when he was a boy in that gritty borough. The play debuted in 1990 and was made into a film (directed by Robert De Niro) in 1993. Chazz brought the play back to Broadway in 2007, toured the US in 2009, and has it back on the boards now. Chazz has said of the play, “It’s a story of the triumphs of the human spirit, the working man. This is not a gangster story; this is more about the working guy, my tribute to the working people. It really touches people — you see people in the audience crying. The show is extremely funny, much funnier than the movie. I encourage people to bring their kids to see it. I have cards like one that my father had given me when I was a little boy, that say, ‘The saddest thing in life is wasted talent’ [a famous quote from A Bronx Tale] and I hand out those cards to kids.” And the show’s focus has gone through a generational shift. “When I first did it, I was the boy talking to the father; now I’m the father talking to the boy,” Palminteri said. “I was so excited for my kids to see the show. When they did, my son ran over to me and said, ‘Dad, I promise you I won’t waste my talent.’ And that was worth everything.” Chazz will bring A Bronx Tale to life at the Vets, 1 Avenue of the Arts, Providence, at 7 pm | $35-$55 |
