Alton Brown Live! The Edible Inevitable Tour

220 Weybosset St, Providence, RI   (view map)

The celebrity chef is not a new phenomenon — we’ve been gleaning culinary advice from the likes of Julia Child, Graham Kerr, Emeril Lagasse, and Gordon Ramsay for years. But modern celebrity chefs have evolved into something entirely different: entertainers first and cooks second. Tear into the glut of food-centric shows on TV and it’s all about personalities — from sweet Southern belle to fancy elitist to fiery badass. Alton Brown has positioned himself as a bit of a wild card. Still a well-respected chef (and my personal go-to for most recipes), he’s decided to take his antics on the road. The two-hour-plus show, which promises lots of audience interaction, features standup comedy, live music, a multimedia lecture, and “food experimentation,” which is why his publicist notes that “ponchos will be provided for fans in the first few rows.” Brown’s “Edible Inevitable Tour” will whet your appetite at the Providence Performing Arts Center, 220 Weybosset St, at 8 pm | $35-$55 ($150 for “premium” level) | 401.421.ARTS | ppacri.org
