Robert Ellis

270 Broadway, Providence, RI   (view map)

The praise is piling up for Robert Ellis’s just-released third album, The Lights From the Chemical Plant (which features members of Deer Tick and Dawes). NPR’s Ann Powers noted that the 25-year-old, who moved from Houston to Nashville two years ago, “incorporates what he’s learned from elders across genres [Ellis has cited Buck Owens, Joni Mitchell, Steely Dan, and Randy Newman as influences, and covers Paul Simon’s ‘Still Crazy After All These Years’ on the new disc]. His own contribution is an imaginative grace that lends his stories of difficult romance, hard living and occasional redemption the depth of ambiguous possibility.” And Texas Monthly named him the Lone Star State’s “next great singer-songwriter.” But Ellis is taking the huzzahs in stride: “I don’t want to paint myself into a corner and rest on my laurels,” he told “I want to keep pushing myself to go out of my own comfort zone.” Ellis and his tight little combo will be at the Columbus Theatre, 270 Broadway, Providence. His pal Ian O’Neil (of Deer Tick) and Smith & Weeden share the bill at 10 pm | $10 advance, $12 day of show |
