Funda Fest: A Celebration of Black Storytelling,

44 Broad St, Westerly, RI   (view map)

The Funda Fest has built a rep on oodles of charisma and some awesome craft. There’s a certain zest in listening to a strong storyteller work his or her magic, and the artists that are central to the program, including Christylez Bacon, Eshu Bumpus, Teju Ologboni, Len Cabral, Rochel Garner Coleman, Ramona Bass Kolobe, Raffini, and Valerie Tutson, have particular strengths when it comes to keeping an audience on its toes. The week’s worth of events kicks off today with a family storytelling concert at the Westerly Public Library at 2 pm (donations encouraged). A relatively new addition is the Liar’s Contest, which is at a to-be-determined site on the 24th at 7 pm ($7). Audience members are encouraged to come up with a string of whoppers that are likely supported by some very nuanced fibs. Sounds like it’s going to be fun to have the wool pulled over your eyes. The main events are at the Southside Cultural Center (393 Broad St, Providence) on the 25th, with a Family FUNday from 10 am to 4 pm (workshops, performances, more) and a concert with many of the principals at 8 pm ($10). Check ribsfest.org for info on all the happenings
