The "Is This Jazz?" series

115 Empire St, Providence, RI   (view map)

You know the story: when Igor Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring debuted in Paris in 1913, the extremely forward-thinking music and choreography incited riotous behavior. A century later, its inventions are still being absorbed and altered. The Eric Hofbauer Quintet has its own spin on the work, which will be presented as part of the “Is This Jazz?” series at AS220, 115 Empire St, Providence. A statement on the guitarist’s website says that his “arrangement [synthesizes] the most memorable melodic and rhythmic elements from the original score with jazz improvisation, [taking] the masterwork off of its 20th-century pedestal and deconstruct[ing] it as a vehicle for ensemble dialogue and personal expression.” The concert opens with works written and arranged for the occasion by The Shaw +7, an ensemble of young musicians under the guidance of Ben Shaw, who curates the series. Showtime is 9 pm | $10 | 401.831.9327 |
