Editors' Picks
Sublime Frequencies has a mission statement. The Seattle-based record label specializes in “acquiring and exposing obscure sights and sounds from modern and traditional urban and rural frontiers.” Their fare ranges from Pop Yeh Yeh: Psychedelic Rock from Singapore and Malaysia 1964-1970 to Ethnic Minority Music of Northwest Xinjiang. Label co-founder Hisham Mayet is also a filmmaker, and will screen and discuss two of his works at Fête, 103 Dike St, Providence. The Divine River: Ceremonial Pageantry In the Sahel details the “music, ritual, life, and landscape along the Niger River”; Vodoun Gods On the Slave Coast explores West African possession ceremonies in Benin, the “birthplace of voodoo.” The event will also feature Robert Jaz DJing from the Sublime Frequencies catalog.
