I heard the phrase a few times during the holiday season: “Pay it forward.” An artistic take on that notion is at the center of “Legacies In Paint: The Mentor Project,” a new exhibit at the Newport Art Museum, 76 Bellevue Ave. For four months, five veteran painters (Paula Martiesian, David Barnes, Michele Provost, John Riedel, and Ida Schmulowitz) and five younger painters (Buck Hastings, Mollie Hosmer-Dillard, Li Jun Lai, Erika Sabel, and Dan Talbot) exchanged ideas and created art outside of an academic setting. Martiesian says the mentors “communicate knowledge, insight, forethought, and encouragement to younger, emerging painters, whose fresh ideas and approaches stimulate the visual conversation,” The show runs through May 5 (Tuesday-Saturday 11 am-4 pm, Sunday 12-4 pm) | $10, $8 seniors, $6 students, free under 6 | 401.848.8200 | newportartmuseum.org
