Crime and Punishment, by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, adapted by Marilyn Campbell and Curt Columbus
Most copies of Fyodor Dostoyevsky’s Crime and Punishment run about 600 pages. Trinity Rep’s take on the classic is a master class in compression (and perfect for this short-attention-span-era): it runs for 90 minutes and features three actors, with Stephen Thorne as Raskolnikov, who grapples with the themes embodied in the philosophical and psychological work. Director Brian Mertes says, “This adaptation [by Marilyn Campbell and Trinity artistic director Curt Columbus] reduces a sprawling book down to its most essential nature, and so it’s only right that the design should follow suit. By burning away any pageantry, the whole experience becomes more heightened, more immediate, and more intensely theatrical.” The show opens on the 17th and runs through February 24 at 201 Washington St, Providence | $15-$68 | 401.351.4242 | trinityrep.com
