Red, by John Logan

172 Exchange St, Pawtucket, RI   (view map)

The abstract expressionist painter Mark Rothko also had a way with words: “Art to me is an anecdote of the spirit, and the only means of making concrete the purpose of its varied quickness and stillness.” And: “There is no such thing as good painting about nothing.” The Gamm Theatre, 172 Exchange St, Pawtucket, is staging John Logan’s Red, a stimulating look at Rothko’s life. It’s set in the late ’50s, when he was working on murals for the Four Seasons restaurant in NYC. Fred Sullivan, Jr., making his Gamm debut, plays the painter; the only other cast member is Marc Dante Mancini, as Rothko’s young assistant. Red runs through December 16 | $36 + $45 (previews Nov 8-11 $26) | 401.723.4266 | gamm

The play is about the life of abstract expressionist painter Mark Rothko
