Epic Theatre Company presents Pop Gules the Culture
Epic Theatre Company’s “Pop Goes the Culture” weekend promises “three entertaining and irreverent one-night-only events that include hecklers, twisted takes on famous endings, and a cult classic read by an army of gay men.” Intrigued? Of course you are! Here are the details: Tonight at 8 you can see The Room, a gloriously bad movie by writer/producer/director/star/savant/auteur/genius Tommy Wiseau that is vying for Rocky Horror Picture Show status re: audience participation; for a Room 101, hit up avclub.com/articles/a-viewers-guide-to-the-room,25721/ so you’ll know when to yell “Denny!” and “Cancer!” and “Focus! Unfocus!” Or just wing it. Oh, and bring plastic spoons — and a football. Seriously. On Saturday at 8, Kevin Broccoli and his friends present “It Doesn’t Have To Be This Way,” with staged readings of alt what-if? endings for Thelma and Louise, Romeo and Juliet, and Anna Karenina, plus rewritten bios for Lolita, Snow White, and Janis Joplin. And on Sunday at 3, it’s “Mean Gays: A Reading of Mean Girls” by 15 gay men. The Mean Gays crew has previously tackled The Princess Bride, Ghostbusters, Spaceballs, and The Goonies; they say “this reading is sure to be the biggest, baddest, and by far, the meanest.” It all takes place at the Zabinski Studio at the Hope Artiste Village, 999 Main St, Pawtucket | Admission is $10 per event | 401.368.7689
"A Special Series of One-Night Only Events Celebrating American Pop Culture" | Sept 21 8 pm, "Tell It the Screen: The Room," a "screening of one of the worst best movies ever" [heckling/mocking/whatever is encouraged] | Sept 22 8 pm, "Writer's Challenge: 'It Doesn't Have To End This Way,' " in which local actors re-imagine the endings of Thelma and Louise, Anna Karenina, Romeo and Juliet, and more | Sept 23 3 pm, "Screenplay Series: 'Mean Gays,' " a reading of Mean Girls done by a cast of 15 gay men
