"America in View: Landscape Photography 1865 to Now"

224 Benefit St, Providence, RI   (view map)

As David Byrne pointed out 34 or so (!) years ago, it’s a big country. “America In View: Landscape Photography 1865 to Now,” the new exhibit at the RISD Museum, 224 Benefit St, Providence, offers a sprawling survey of the coast-to-coast splendor, from Carleton Watkins’s atmospheric views of wide open spaces to Ansel Adams’s majestic visions to Lee Friedlander’s snapshot of Atlantic City to Sally Mann’s unsettling and poignant images. RISD Museum director John W. Smith says, “The landscape has inspired and challenged artists since the earliest days of our nation. [These] remarkable works not only capture photography’s evolving relationship with the landscape but also trace the larger narrative of America itself.” “America In View” runs through January 13 (Tuesday-Sunday from 10 am-5 pm, Thursday till 9) | $12, $10 seniors, $5 students, $3 ges 5-18 | 401.454.6500 | risdmuseum.org
